How to predict football scores: 9 tips that actually help

Home advantage, form, goal difference, common scorelines and when to call a draw: practical tips for better score predictions.

Nobody predicts football perfectly. That's what makes it fun. But there are patterns that make some guesses smarter than others. These nine tips will help you rack up more points in HeyFootball's Predictions game, where an exact score earns 100 points and 50 coins and the right result earns 50 points and 25 coins.

1. Get the result right first

An exact score is a bonus. Getting the result (home win, draw or away win) right still pays half the points, and it happens far more often. Decide who wins first, then pick the score.

2. Respect home advantage

Teams generally do better at home: familiar pitch, no travel and their own fans. When two teams are evenly matched, leaning toward the home side is usually the smarter pick.

3. Stick to common scorelines

Football is low-scoring. Results like 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 and 2-0 are among the most common in top leagues. Wild predictions like 4-3 are fun, but they rarely land.

Tip: when a strong team plays a weak one, 2-0 is a safer exact-score guess than 4-0. The favourite often wins comfortably without running up a huge score.

4. Don't forget draws

Draws happen more than people think: roughly one in four matches in the big European leagues ends level. If two teams are close in the table and in form, 1-1 is a perfectly good prediction.

5. Check recent form

A team's last five matches tell you more than its name. HeyFootball's Form tab ranks teams by goal difference over their last five games. Here's why goal difference is a better guide than wins and losses.

6. Look at goal difference, not just points

Two teams can have the same points, but one keeps winning 1-0 and the other wins 4-1. Goal difference shows how dominant a team really is and how many goals to expect.

7. Watch for tired legs and big games

Teams in the Champions League often play twice a week. A big European night on Wednesday can mean a rotated, tired team on Saturday. That's when surprises happen.

8. Derbies are unpredictable

Local rivals know each other inside out, and form often goes out the window. Derbies tend to be tight and tense, so a narrow scoreline or a draw is often sensible.

9. Predict before kick-off, every week

Predictions lock at kick-off, and points only come from games you actually predict. Make it a routine: open the Predictions game before each match day and fill in everything. Consistency beats the occasional lucky guess.

Bonus: keep it fun

Predictions in HeyFootball are a free game for points and coins. There's no money involved, and that's the way it should be.
